Sensitisation against Lassa fever intensifies in Yobe State

The Yobe state Lassa fever sensitisation team, in its third day, has reached out the place in Damaturu, yesterday and Emir of Fika and Postiskum in its effort of creating awareness to prevent the outbreak of the virus in the state.

In his remarks at both palaces, Bulama Yaro, an Official of the Public Health Department, Ministry of Health, highlighted major symptoms of the disease.

He enjoined people to report any symptoms to the nearest health centre for quick possible diagnosis and treatment.

Yaro explained that symptoms manifest gradually, starting with fever, general weakness, and depression, adding that after few days, headache, sore throat, muscle pain, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, and abdominal pains among others come forth.

He said people should promote good community hygiene to discourage rodents from entering into homes, keep foods and water covered to prevent contamination by rats and store grains and another foodstuff in rodent-free containers.

He added that people should also dispose of garbage far from their homes, maintain a clean environment, avoid drying food materials in open places.

Abdullahi Bego, the commissioner for Information, Home Affairs and Culture who is also the campaign team leader, reiterated the state government’s commitment to sensitise people of the state to prevent any outbreak of the disease.

In his remarks, Muhammed Abali, Chairman Council of Chiefs Yobe commended Yobe government for its concern and proactive effort of preventing outbreak the virus.

The Emir of Potiskum, Alhaji Umaru Buraram also appreciated the state government’s gesture and advised the government to sustain the effort.
