90 per cent of mysterious deaths in Yobe not related to COVID-19 – Officials

The Yobe state government said approximately 90 per cent of the reported cases of mysterious deaths in the state did not have symptoms that were consistent with Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Dr Muhammed Gana, the State Commissioner for Health and Vice Chairman of COVID-19 Prevention and Control disclosed this on Tuesday in Damaturu while briefing newsmen.

Dr Gana said the death rate was investigated for five weeks, starting from the last week of April to the second week of May 2020 and the trend actually showed an increase in mortality.

“We actually noticed there were about 471 death that was reported within the period.

“96 per cent of those that died had no travel history outside the state and approximately 90 per cent of the cases did not have symptoms that were consistent with COVID-19.”, he explained.

He explained that 16 of the 471 deceased relatives revealed someone with similar symptoms and all the 16 were investigated and referred to the facility and only three of the 16 were found to be Coronavirus (COVID-19) positive.

Earlier in his remarks, Alhaji Idi Gubana, the Chairman of the committee and the State Deputy Governor commended the State Governor Mai Mala Buni for giving the committee all the necessary support and cooperation.

He also appreciated the efforts of the members of the committee for being firm in curtailing the spread of the virus in the state.

While he salutes the gesture of Federal Government, Moth-East Development Commission and Victims Support Fund for providing palliatives to the state, Idi Gubana enjoined the people of the state to continue to adhere to medical guidelines.
