EU, Yobe Gov’t partner to enroll 5,000 youths in various skills

European Union-funded project, Brice Mercy Corps has partnered with Yobe State Government in the enrollment of 5,321 youths in various skills which include, carpentry, plumbing, tailoring, welding, bricks making, bag making, modern agric production among others.

The sum of £798 which is equivalent to N363 million will be used for the youths enrollment programme.

Programme Director, Brice Mercy Corps, EU Funded Programme, Hugh Briggs during the official flag-off of the Programme on Thursday in Damaturu said that it is part of the Building Resilience in Complex Crisis (BRICC) programme of vocational skills training.

According to him, the project is a six months programme commencing October this year and will end in March 2021.

He explained that on the initial stage they carried out youth-led labour market assessment on what the Youths actually want and the demand and supply side with an emphasis on the most profitable ventures that the youths are engaged into as well as considered safety of their Communities.

Briggs also informed that the project is holding in various local government areas of the State such as Gujba, Gulani, Potiskum, Damaturu, Geidam and others.

While flagging off the Programme, Goni Bukar Lawan, Commissioner Yobe State Ministry of Youths, Sports, Social and Community Development represented by the Permanent Secretary, Galtima Mai Ali commended the EU project pointing out that the initiative will go a long way in reducing the youth unemployment menace thus making them self reliant and responsible to the society.

He assured that “our partnership on youth development will continue based on the priority our Governor Mai Mala Buni has been giving to the Youth in the state.”
