EXCERPTS OF THE INTERVIEW

Neptune Prime: You are one of the Kannywood actresses that is successful and very popular yet one hardly reads about you in the press tell us your story?

Maryam: Well my name is Maryam Jibril Gidaddo Babban Yaro. The name Babban Yaro is a stage name I got since I appeared in the successful movie, Babban Yaro alongside Adam A. Zango. I was born in Jos in 1988, I attended my primary school in Jos, later proceeded to Arabic Girls Secondary School Bauchi. I did not stop there, I enrolled for a Diploma programme in computer, I also did another diploma in statistics, later got a Higher National Diploma and a University Degree from the University of Jos, educationally I am okay.

NP: Fine, how about marriage, were you married before joining the film industry?

Maryam: Yes after my WAEC and NECO I got married at the age of 13, one year after I had my first child a baby girl.

NP: What happened next, how did you find yourself in Kannywood?

Maryam: Well honestly, before I started acting, I hate everything about the industry and acting in particular. I see those in it as people who are not serious in life. My sister who likes acting so much was the first to start but she did not succeed and later left, then I decided to join and make a career out of it, and today here I am.

NP: Lest I forget what happened to your first marriage before you joined Kannywood. Are you still married or has your husband died or you separated from him?

Maryam: It is true, but what happened as far as I am concerned is a secret to keep for life. God is always happy with whoever keeps the secret of his fellow Muslim. People should excuse me on that I intend to keep that secret but I am not married now.

NP: We also heard that you have another 7-year-old son, did you get that out of wedlock or you married again?

Maryam: After I left my first husband and joined Kannywood, I later met the father of my second son who is now 11-years-old like you rightly pointed out. My second husband absconded when I was one month pregnant. I learnt he now stays in Kaduna. After I delivered, he sent somebody to take the picture of the son and now that the boy is 11-years-old he used to talk on the phone with his father but he refused to tell me where he is staying in Kaduna or call me on phone.

NP: You said the circumstance that separated you from your first husband should be kept secret then your second husband abandoned you for seven years, tell us what is wrong with you and what secret are you hiding?

Maryam: That is why I don’t want to discuss it. My second husband left me seven years ago technically he is no longer my husband. If I get somebody, I love I will marry again. Please that’s how far I can go. I married twice separated twice and have two children take that as my story.

NP: How many films have you featured in?

Maryam: Honestly, they are many hundreds in number, but I started as a singer, I and Mahmud Nagudu composed the popular song “Garin so, Nisa”. My first film which was shot in Jos was “Ragowar Yaki” by then Ali Nuhu too was acting in Jos, but my two best films are “Munafikin Mata” and “Nasibi” all with Ali Nuhu. I am a very soft cool, and beautiful actress. I maintained a trouble-free posture for years, I mind my business but honestly, I am very successful. I am also into business and I travel a lot. I personally like some of my films like Babban Yaro, “Munafikin Mata”, “Nasibi, Wata Hudu, Al’ajabi, Mukaddari, Zawarawa”, Fulani Sultan, “Basaja” and others.

NP: There was a time you disappeared from the industry what happened, and is it true you left Adam A. Zango’s company?

Maryam: Well, I did not disappear. It was my father who insisted that I must go back to school. As for Zango’s Company’s yes, it was the films that Zango gave me or appeared with me that gave me my first breakthrough. But like I said earlier I started as a singer with Muhmud Nagudu remember also that it is producers that decide who to feature in their films. Maryam is not a producer, let me also use this rare opportunity to tell our viewers and the society at large that we are not cheap, wayward or does not stay in marriage. People should come close to us and understand us. We are the best set of people one can come across, men are afraid of us, we too used to be afraid of them. As for when I will stop acting, there is no date unless I get married again. But for now, I am at my peak, I am not thinking of leaving the industry. I married twice but I am just a 33-years-old lady full of life and ripe to face the future.
