The Yonhap News Agency reports that South Korean athletes in Tokyo will have their own catering service throughout the Olympics. This is due to contamination fears.
Yonhap further said the decision to cook food for the athletes was due to Fukushima’s fear of food.
The report says the South Korean Olympic Committee (KSOC) has set up a makeshift kitchen in three containers in the parking lot of a hotel about 20 minutes from the Athletes’ Village.
Fourteen chefs prepare three boxed meals a day for each team member, with over 400 boxes delivered to athletes and officials each day.
The city is one of the regions of Japan exposed to high levels of radiation following a tsunami-triggered collapse at a nuclear power plant in March 2011.
The kitchen team will spend the entire Games at the hotel.
But the operation will have to be stopped if anyone tests positive for the coronavirus, Yonhap said citing Jeong Nyeon Goo, chief of operations at the national training centre.
NAN reports that South Korean athletes have received local meals at the Olympics since the 2008 Games in Beijing.
