Flood submerge 1,567 farmlands, killing 5 in Bauchi

Flood has destroyed about 1,567 farmlands, killing 5 people in Jaama’are LGA of Bauchi state. The heavy rainfall which lasted for over 20 hours on Tuesday, submerged crops and farmlands in seven villages of the area.

Samaila Jarma, the council’s chairman, confirmed the incident to NAN on Thursday

He said the areas of Jogiyal; Yola, Doko-Doko, Gongo, Kabigel, Digiza and Massalachin Idi area of Jama’are town got heavily flooded after heavy and long hours of rainfall.

Jarma said the flood was possibly caused by the overflow of water from the Jos River, after the heavy rain. He said the council has distributed foodstuffs and other relief items to the victims while they wait for government intervention.

“We recovered five corpses from the water in submerged areas.

“One out of the five corpses recovered was identified to be from one of the affected villages while the identity of the remaining bodies is yet to be established.

“The corpses have since been buried in compliance with necessary protocols after exhaustive scrutiny to determine their origin.

“We are presently in custody of their photographs, in case if their families start searching,” He added.
