The Sokoto State Commissioner of Health, Dr Muhammad Ali Inname has confirmed that no fewer than 56 people have been confirmed dead, since the outbreak of gastroenteritis in Sokoto State.

Dr Inname gave this update while briefing newsmen after the State Executive Council meeting on Thursday.

While stressing that the gastroenteritis affected 22 out of the 23 local government areas of the state, Dr Inmame listed the worst-hit LGAs to include, Dange Shuni, Illela, Gwadabawa and Bodinga.

He further divulged that the Tambuwal led government has procured drugs worth millions of naira and distributed same to all the 23 local government areas of the state to help prevent and control the health threat.

Listing other measures taken to curtail further spread of the disease, Dr Inname said that Governor Tambuwal has directed all the 23 local government council chairmen to be holding stakeholders meetings to sensitise their people on the preventive measures.

“These council chairmen have also been directed to ensure daily monitoring and supervision of their domain and report back to the state government for prompt action. This is in addition to the call on members of the public to clean their environment and ensure self-hygiene culture at all times”.

On her part, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Science and Technical Education, Dr Kulu Haruna said the council has considered and approved the purchase of 2500 double space beds and 5000 mattresses at the cost of N 437.5 million to be distributed to the science schools across the state.

Speaking in the same vein, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Bashir Garba said the council has considered and approved a law establishing the new Shehu Shagari’s University of Education.
