NGO to expend $600,000 on menstrual hygiene management in Bauchi

A non-governmental organisation, Plan International with funding from the Kimberly Clark Corporation will implement a two-year project in three Local Government Areas of Ningi, Bauchi and Katagum on menstrual hygiene management.

The project targets 200,000 individuals out of which 63% of the population must be females, Project Coordinator, Ahmed Afolabi Shola mentioned this during a one day Startup workshop for Stakeholders at Hazibal Hotel.

Afolabi said the key activities the project will carry out includes: Adolescent programming, Community Influencing and Community and Mass media messaging.

The sum of 600,000 dollars has been earmarked for the project, Plan envisions increased knowledge and confidence, as every girl has the ability to manage menstrual hygiene within the context of Adolescent health.

The national program manager of Plan International, Mohammed Nasir said the program will adopt an innovative communication mechanism to increase access for women and girls as well as men and boys confidence in tackling Gender-related, Socio-Cultural barriers to proper and safe menstrual hygiene management.

On his part, the Chairman of the state’s primary health care development Agency laments the failure of some parents to teach their children and wards proper hygiene, especially during adolescents.

He however warns that if parents shy away from their God-given responsibility, they might have to blame themselves later in life when a wrong decision has been made.

The project has its key implementation partner as a Civil society organization and they will leverage on other existing community platforms like Ward Development Committee (WDC) religious and traditional rulers among others.
