Kogi SEMA charge residents of flood-prone areas to relocate

People living in flood-prone areas across the Local Government Areas of Kogi State are advised to relocate to higher grounds.
The Executive Secretary, Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Sunday Obari, gave the advice in Lokoja.
Mr Obari said the call followed a warning from relevant agencies, speculating that the state may likely be affected by flood amongst other states of the federation.

He explained that flood has caused a lot of disaster to the livelihood of many Nigerians, saying that obedience to the call will go a long way at averting its effect should the State experience flood.
The Executive Secretary pointed out that the Agency has been carrying out an awareness campaign to enlighten those residents in flood-prone areas who are often affected by flood in the State, stressing that the Agency will not relent efforts at meeting its responsibilities.
“Already, there is a warning from NIMET that some states, including Kogi, may experience flood this year (2021), that is why SEMA as an Agency, have been out to carry awareness campaign to those living in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher grounds as soon as possible.
“We have sent messages to Local Governments and some people have also adopted other preventive measures as well, it is said that prevention is better than cure that is why we are pleading with people to please relocate.”
Mr Obari called for the cooperation of the people to enabling the Agency to carry out its duty and advice those concerned to give priority to the security of lives and property.
“When there is life, there is hope that is why we are calling on the people that are usually affected to treat the warning with seriousness.
“Time will soon come that we will engage uniform men because we don’t want to start counting losses from flood disaster, the state Government have tried its best by providing camps and hostels for flood-prone victims, all they have to do is to move fast, occupy those places, return to their houses after the flood if eventually experience.
