Formalin is a poisonous solution of formaldehyde and methanol used as a preservative that poses great health dangers to the human body.

Abubakar Jimoh, NAFDAC’s spokesman, who gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said unscrupulous business owners have been using formalin to preserve poultry products, chicken and turkey in the country.

Jimoh stated that formalin is capable of preserving such products for weeks before they get to consumers.

“NAFDAC is alerting Nigerians to this practice. There are enough poultry products in the country than to resort to frozen chicken smuggled in, despite Federal Government’s ban,” Jimoh said.

The NAFDAC spokesman also called the attention of consumers to the negative impact of patronising business owners who smuggle poultry products into the country on local poultry farmers and marketers.
