Regular medical check up reduces blindness, chronic diseases – Specialist

As part of their efforts to reduce the burden of eye diseases and cases of blindness, the Eye Clinic of the Abubakar tafawa Balewa teaching hospital in collaboration with Bauchi state chapter of the Nigerian union of Journalists organized a free one day screening for journalists and other residents of Bauchi state.
During the exercise, about 70 glasses were freely distributed with over 300,000 naira expended on the intervention.
Team lead from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa teaching hospital who is also a Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr Shahir Bello identified Glaucoma and Diabetes as the leading causes of blindness, he therefore advised residents to ensure regular screening of their eyes.
In his remarks, Chairman of NUJ Bauchi chapter Umar Saidu said the exercise is in fulfillment of their cardinal mandate of ensuring good health and well being of their members and more of this intervention is under way.

Some beneficiaries of the intervention, Paul Orude from the Correspondent Chapel and Mohammed from Radio Nigeria said the exercise avail them an opportunity to boost their health and general well being.
Hundreds of residents and journalists benefited from the exercise, which is expected to continue on Thursday 14 and beyond as part of activities to mark world Sight Day 2021.
