Story from Emmanuel OLOGUN, Abuja
The 2021 polio vaccination exercise has been flagged off in the Federal Capital Territory [FCT] with an ambitious aim of covering about 500, 000 households and about 2million children before the end of the year.
FCT Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Tijani Aliyu who flagged off the exercise on behalf of the minister stated that all hands must be on deck to rid the territory of the crippling effect of polio and other communicable diseases.
Dr Aliyu disclosed that the recent exercise was a follow-up to the first phase of the vaccination which was designed by the administration to rid the territory of the debilitating disease.
The minister, while performing the vaccination exercise at the Garki Village, urged FCT residents to ensure that their children take advantage of the second phase to receive the anti-polio shot to keep them safe and healthy especially as the rainy period gradually gives way for the hot season.
Dr Ramatu Tijani Aliyu performed the ceremonial vaccination of some children and thereafter called on mothers to ensure that their children take advantage of the exercise before it winds up in December.
The minister spoke passionately about the need for mothers to adopt proper hygiene in their families and for them to give adequate priority to the health and the nutritional needs of their children at this critical period.
All the six area councils of the FCT will participate in the immunization exercise with Abaji, AMAC, Bwari taking the lead in the first phase of the exercise, while Kuje, Kwali and Gwagwalada are to be covered in the second phase.
