Story from Najibullahi ADAMU, Bauchi

Health workers under the aegis of the ‘Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria’ (MHWUN) have called on the Bauchi state government to implement the ‘Consolidated Salary Structure’ fully for medical and health workers in the state.

National president of the union Comrade Biobelomeye Joy Josaya made the call Tuesday during the Northeast zonal meeting of the union held in Bauchi.

Represented by the national treasurer of the union Comrade Auwal Kyawa, the president said considering the essential services they render in society, medical and health workers need motivation.

Also speaking, the Bauchi state chairman MHWUN Comrade Dauda Shuaibu explained that the meeting was a forum for the members to interact with government officials as part of steps to improve industrial harmony and cordial relationship between the union and the state government.

He added that the meeting between the government and labour should be held regularly to get the opinions and views of members to ensure effective health care delivery.

He however lamented that state auditors tamper with the negotiated allowances of health workers without consultation or recourse to round table discussion.

In his remarks, the Bauchi state head of civil service Alhaji Yahuza Adamu Haruna said the government will give priority to the health sector assuring that his office would work towards the implementation of the consolidated salary structure of health workers.

While the chairman of the Bauchi state primary health care development agency Dr Rilwanu Mohammed said the present administration of Governor Bala Mohammed as part of measures to revamp the health sector declared a state of emergency on health and organised a national summit to identify health challenges and solutions for the state.
