Expert wants stigmatisation of persons with infertility issues, IVF children stopped

A gynaecologist and paediatrics consultant, Dr Paulinus Abu, has described as unfortunate the stigmatisation of infertility in women and children born through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), advising those engaging in the act of stigmatization to desist henceforth.

This is even as Dr Abu explained that natural conception is about twenty to twenty-five per cent and the same thing applies to IVF.

The Health expert called on the government at all levels to create policies that will assist the less privileged in funding their medical bills in times of emergency.

Dr Abu who made this known in Makurdi the Benue State capital noted that Nigerians mostly embark on medical tourism because of the well-tailored health policies of the countries where good health facilities are found.

He said: “In Nigeria,  healthcare is very expensive because a lot of people have to pay through their pockets instead of out of pocket money spending”.

“For instance, if we compare ourselves with the Western world, you will find out that health is not a challenge for them either because the government has a well established and well-monitored health insurance scheme.

“So, the major challenges have been financed to get the state of the Art equipment to see how you can have the best healthcare services.

On the issue of stigmatisation of women with fertility problems and children born through IVF, he said: “It is rather unfortunate because natural conception is about twenty to twenty-five per cent and the same thing applies to IVF”.

“So when a couple has a problem, the solution to it shouldn’t be something that should be stigmatized despite the fact that it is technologically based.

“Infertility like malaria too should be seen as a health challenge and not spiritual or a curse.
