NGO sensitizes Gombe citizens on use of Vitamin A for children

Story from Najibullahi ADAMU, Gombe

A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) known as ‘Vitamin Angels’ has sensitized some citizens of Gombe State on the need to deliver Vitamin A and deworming drugs to pregnant women and children aged six to 59 months.

A representative of the NGO, Mr Abubakar Abubakar, during the sensitization training held at Maidugu hotel in Gombe explained that the idea behind the training was to address the problem of vitamin deficiency in pregnant women and their children.

He pointed out that some women give birth to babies that are underweight due to a lack of vitamin A and multiple micronutrients supplements.

According to him, 550 people in the state would be trained by the NGO advising that as soon as a woman conceives, she should start taking vitamin A and the multiple micronutrients supplements so that she can bear a healthy child.

“The main purpose of this training is to ensure that children in Nigeria are not vitamin deficient and pregnant women give birth to healthy babies in order to avoid giving birth to babies that are underweight, maternal anaemia and all those sorts of pregnancy problems.

“Those that are trained will go back to their various communities to deliver Vitamin A and multiple micronutrients supplements to babies”, he said.

Abubakar further stated that multiple micronutrients supplements has 15 combinations of minerals and vitamins and is better than the known Iron and Folic acid which has only two components.
