The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the day is a global initiative annually marked on April 11 to raise awareness about adequate access to care during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal services.

The theme of the 2022 celebration is “Access to Quality Maternal Care, a Right for Every Pregnant Woman” and the slogan for the year is “Save Mother, Save the Future.”

Tsanyawa said that the state government prioritised the health of citizens and women, in particular, thus increasing the state’s budgetary allocation to health and to maternal mortality programmes.

According to him, the state government increased its annual budgetary allocation for Maternal and Child Health Services from N20 million in 2015 to N100 million in 2022.

He added that the state also invested in training 1,130 female community volunteers to strengthen its commitment to women’s health.

In addition, the commissioner said, 220 focal persons had community engagements to promote Maternal and Child Health services.

He said that with the commitment of the state to improving the health sector, it received high recognition, which translated into awards.

Such awards included the Best Performing State in Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response in Nigeria.

He reiterated the state government’s commitment to further improve the lives and safety of mothers and children.
