Nigerian, Halima Shuwa, emerge as Manchester University’s best student
A young Nigerian researcher, Halima Shuwa, has emerged as the best student of the year at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom (UK).
Shuwa, who is on a fully funded academic scholarship by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) at the UK-based tertiary institution, was honoured for her contribution to research at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While presenting the award to the Nigerian female researcher, President of the University, Prof. Dame Nancy Rothwell, said Halima was chosen because of her dedication and selfless commitment to ‘research excellence’.
“Halima dedicated her time throughout the pandemic to determine the immune response of hospitalised patients, and also predicted which patients will further develop long-term Covid complications,” Rothwell explained.
Halima, hails from Shuwa town in Madagali local government area of Adamawa State but was born, raised and schooled in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
She studied Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMaid), before she bagged a M.Sc in Immunology at the Usmanu Dan-Fodio University, Sokoto (UDUS).
Halima was awarded a PTDF scholarship for her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), at the University of Manchester, where she is carrying out extensive research on Immunology.
She has so far published seven (7) papers in various high-impact journals in the course of her ongoing PhD programme, and still have four more papers under review.
About completing her PhD, Halima has gotten multiple job offers from the University of Manchester, and several pharmaceutical companies in the UK.
She has however accepted a job offer from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where she will continue her cutting-edge research to discover an alternative cancer treatment, targeting B-cells in Immuno-Oncology settings.
