NMA demands justice over attack on medical doctor in Bauchi

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Bauchi State Branch, has demanded for a thorough investigation of the attack on one of its members, Dr Mohammed Sani, the Chief of the Medical Officer of General Hospital Misau by a patient’s relative.
The state chairman of NMA, Dr Adamu Sambo, said that the attack left the Doctor with axe wounds on his head and a fracture on his leg.
Sambo said the physical attack happened at the premises of the hospital on the 8th of July 2022.
The incident according to the NMA chairman started when a woman was brought to the hospital with a case of prolonged labour from a private hospital.
Dr Sambo said that the patient came to the facility with eclampsia, a condition that occurs in pregnant women and could lead to bleeding and other complications.
“Already the head of the baby was out and because she was weak, a team of resident doctors from the ATBU teaching hospital on rural posting attended to her and carried out assisted Virginia delivery using force helps.
“After that, the woman was bleeding and the doctors had to conduct surgery to investigate the cause of the bleeding and the findings were negative as the uterus was intact.
“When the bleeding continued, the mother was then referred to Federal Medical Centre Azare for further treatment and from reports, she is recovering while the baby is at home.
“The patient’s relative came to the hospital with an axe and demanded to see the doctor, and when he (doctor) came, the relative used the axe on him leaving him with cuts and a broken leg.
He said that the patient’s relative who is her uncle was apprehended and handed over to the police.
Dr Sambo said that the association has constituted a committee that visited the Misau General Hospital to carry out a thorough investigation to ascertain the true picture of what transpired.
He noted that the stakeholders in Misau also condemned the action of the patient’s relative.
“All we want now is justice for our member who was not part of the team that attended to the woman.
“This is not good for the huge investment of the Bauchi State Government in the health sector and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with ATBU Teaching Hospital Management for the posting of resident doctors to rural areas.”
