NGO frowns at increasing cases of kidney disease in Yobe

Spotlight for Transparency and Accountability Initiative (STAI), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) on Tuesday in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital expressed serious concern over the prevalence of kidney diseases amongst the people in parts of the state.
Alhaji Modu Mu’azu, the CEO of the organisation said that considering the alarming spread of the disease, it has become an emergency situation that requires quick and drastic measures from the government.

“This issue became frightening and alarming with the recent reports.
“About 120 to 150 people in Gashu’a local government die annually of chronic kidney disease, according to a recent report.
“And about 20 to 30 people are diagnosed with kidney disease every month”, he said.
Mu’azu revealed that his organisation has launched a campaign tagged “#ActOnKidneyNow #ResueGashu’a”, using a multidimensional approach to engage and support the government to address the situation.
However, Mu’azu commended the Yobe State Government for providing free dialysis for the indigenes of the state.
He said that while the efforts were commendable, the government should also find the root cause of the problems and put an end to it.
The CEO called on all people of the state and other stakeholders to participate in the campaign to ensure preventive measures are put in place to protect the people of the state from the disease.
