Two suspected kidnappers have been killed by gun bullets and hostages rescued after police attacked kidnappers sharing ransom money in Kwara State.
According to a statement by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Okasanmi Ajayi, the suspected kidnappers were discovered after officers raided a bush to search for some people kidnapped in the community.
Ajayi said the victims, Mrs Adusat Lawal and her Son Taofeek Lawal in Shao, were kidnapped on 13th September 2022, and the command’s tactical team launched a manhunt for them.
On sighting the police operatives, he said the suspected kidnappers opened fire on the search and rescue team which was supported by vigilantes and local hunters, leading to an intense gun duel.
Ajayi said during the encounter, two of the kidnappers got hit by bullets but were arrested and taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) where they were confirmed dead.
He said the two victims that were abducted were also rescued unhurt and have been reunited with their families while the corpses of the suspected kidnappers have been deposited at UITH morgue for autopsy.
Exhibits recovered from the kidnappers include one Honda Accord Saloon car with Reg. Number LAGOS GJ 52 LSR, one single barrel gun, and an unspecified amount of money.
The statement reads, “Recall that on 13/9/22 at about 2320hrs a Kidnapping incident occurred in Shao, Kwara State, one Afusat Lawal ‘F’ and her son Taofeek Lawal ‘M’ were abducted.
“Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the public that the victims have been rescued after an intensive and painstaking search and rescue operation by the Command’s Tactical Teams, supported by vigilantes and hunters.
“Effort is still being intensified to get other fleeing members of the gang arrested for prosecution.
“Meanwhile, the rescued victims have been reunited with their family after being certified medically stable”. Ajayi said.
