Compulsory education for girls reality with assent to bill by Gov. Buni – Girl child education advocate in Yobe

Story from Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

Honourable Khadija Sanusi, otherwise referred to as “Girl Champion”, Save the Children International (SCI), Yobe State, had expressed optimism that assent to Child Protection Law by Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State will surely address issues of early and forced marriages and make learning compulsory for all girls.

The champion made this known Wednesday while presenting her paper on the topic” Education for Crisis Affected Girls and Children with Disabilities, during a media briefing on Girl Education for Conflict-Affected North East Nigerian project with the Yobe State children parliament organised by Save the Children International ( SCI) in the state.

The event which took place at the Centre for Community Development and Research Network (CCDRN) Conference Hall in Damaturu was attended by students, teachers as well as journalists in the state.

She used the forum to call on partners to support the government in the full implementation of the laws for the interest of the children and society.

Khadija also commended Governor Mai Mala Buni for his efforts towards revitalising the educational sector in the state and giving hope for the girl child’s future.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Field Manager of SCI, Yobe office, Mr Mark Umoru, said Save the Children would ensure that children survive, live, and are protected in Yobe State.

He further revealed that SCI had been implementing the Education for Crises Affected Girls (ECG) projects in the state for the past three years.

“The project was aimed at supporting crises-affected girls aged 6 to 14 to have access to quality education and gender equality”, the SCI Yobe field manager said.
