2023 elections will be Africa’s most credible – INEC

Story from Fa’izatu Aliyu DOMA, Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says Nigeria’s 2023 elections will be the most credible elections in Africa as the commission is trying it best to make that happen.

Festus Okoye, INEC’s national commissioner for information and voter education, said this on Wednesday at the 2022 Calabar carnival in Cross River.

Okoye said the commission participation in the carnival is to sensitise and encourage Nigerians to collect their permanent voter cards (PVCs) and vote in the coming elections.

The INEC commissioner said Nigerians need to understand that they are powerful with their PVCs and the power to vote the right candidate lies in their hands.

“My message to Nigerians is that only the PVC can change their circumstances,” NAN quoted him as saying.

“Therefore, those who have no PVCs have no business in the electoral process.

“Our responsibility is to ensure a free, fair and credible election, and to also ensure that the PVCs are available for the people. Those that Nigerians will vote for should win the 2023 election.

“The time had come for us to organise the freest and fairest election on the continent of Africa.”

Okoye said the commission owes no allegiance to anyone except Nigerians because the commission has no political party.

He added that the commission would mobilise all the national assets to ensure that the 2023 polls are the best ever.
