Yuletide: NGO donates relief items to Adamawa, Borno IDPs in Abuja
A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Alpha Female Network, has donated medical supplies, clothes, and food items to 100 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Abuja.
The NGO started the maiden edition of its outreach at the Kaura IDP camp hosting some displaced persons from Borno and Adamawa states, Guardian Newspaper reports.
Speaking during the outreach, the founder of the group, Rita Damian, said the exercise aims to touch the lives of the less privileged, especially those that have been displaced from their homes due to insurgency as the festive season approaches.
Damien said her team will be conducting checks and mental health talks to women on their overall well-being as well as creating more awareness on raising the girl-child and protecting her from sexual violence which is prevalent in IDPs camps.
She said “We are here to help the less privileged, to show them some love and we came along with food items, drugs, medical check-up kits, clothes, and items of importance.
“We already have visited this camp about twice and we have organised our intervention targeting different groups of women such as the old women, women in business, breastfeeding mothers, and pregnant women who will be able to get food, boxes of relief items, medical check-up, and free drugs,” she said.
According to Damian, out of the 100 beneficiaries, 70 of them are women because “we believe that women are that pivotal point to the society so if you can actually impact a woman’s life, you can impact on their families so that is the reason why we put together this outreach.”
She explained that the Alpha Female Network is a community of female entrepreneurs and career professionals who come together to build, impact and groom well-rounded women in their areas of endeavours.

She said that the visit of well-meaning Nigerians to the IDP camp has kept many of them as some of the Non-Governmental Organisations, (NGOs), and other groups often give them more relief items than even the government.
“As we are displaced, people that are coming like this to assist us are more than even the government agencies in our sight because we are really depending on NGOs like this for both our health, our feeding, and everything so we really appreciate this organisation for the outreach.
“They came to us and followed all the processes in getting to us. They first visited us to know what we need before they finally came back for the outreach,” she said.
