Fire guts another Borno market on election day

Barely a few weeks after a fire incident burnt down numerous shops at the popular Maiduguri Monday Market, some sections of Biu Central Market, the second largest market in Maiduguri, Borno State, were razed by fire while voting exercise was on.

Daily Trust reports that traders, who did not open because of elections, were seen rushing to the scene as smoke billowed into the sky.

Vice chairman of Civilian JTF in Biu, Aliyu Isa, said they were alerted of the outbreak around 9:00 am.

He said it took the effort of good Samaritans and the fire service to subdue the inferno.

“It has actually disrupted elections in some parts of the town but people later returned to cast their votes,” he said.

Isa said the fire largely consumed the section of the market where timbers are sold.

Neptune Prime reports that on Feb 26, a day after the conduct of the presidential and national assembly polls, the largest market in Borno metropolis, the Maiduguri Monday Market, was razed down and over 10,000 shops burnt.

After donations from government organisations, political parties and individuals, the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, revealed rehabilitation works at the Maiduguri Monday market have commenced in order to enable traders to return to their place of business.
