First case of Anthrax recorded in Nigeria 

 

Nigeria has reportedly recorded its first case of the deadly zoonotic disease, Anthrax, according to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

Chief Veterinary Officer of the Federation, Dr Columba Vakuru who confirmed the incident said the case was detected in a private farm in Suleja Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger.

According to Dr Vakuru, the case was first dectected on Friday, July 14, 2023 with animals manifesting symptoms of the disease.

The vet officers said a laboratory test confirmed the disease and the farm has been put under quarantine.

To curtail further spread of the disease, the federal and the Niger state government have taken measures to ensure the outbreak is controlled and contained quickly in Nigeria.

The government also announced Plans are underway to conduct nationwide vaccination of cattle, sheep and goats against anthrax.

Surveillance of anthrax will be heightened in livestock farms, markets and abattoirs .
