NAHCO empowers Lagos schools with borehole facilities, alleviating water shortages
The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) has recently commissioned borehole projects in two communities in Lagos schools, a move that has been widely commended by the beneficiaries and the Lagos Local Education Authorities.
A statement by Mr. Tayo Ajakaye, AGM of Corporate Communications, mentioned, “Before NAHCO’s intervention, pupils in Ewutuntun, Mafoluku, where five schools are located, had to leave the school premises during school hours to search for water in neighboring houses. The lack of water also made it difficult to maintain hygiene in the schools.”
However, the commissioning, which took place last Friday and was led by Mr. Indranil Gupta, the Group Managing Director/CEO of the prominent ground handling company, has substantially resolved the problem.
Gupta, during the commissioning, stated, “The borehole project will provide water not only for the current students but also for future generations.”
He emphasized NAHCO’s full commitment to supporting the government through its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
According to the CEO, it is essential for stakeholders to unite and support the government in its efforts to provide a better future for children. He added that it is the responsibility of the community, not just the family, to raise children.
Mrs. Florence Aderemi, the Head of Mobilization at the Local Government Education Authority, expressed gratitude to NAHCO for their support to the school children.
She mentioned that the presence of borehole facilities would increase enrollment and retention rates in the schools. Aderemi also shared her previous distress at witnessing the school children leaving the premises in search of water.
She extended her thanks to NAHCO for their assistance to the schools and prayed for the continued progress of the company.
Similarly, Mrs. Nwafor, a former Headteacher of State Primary School, Ewutuntun, expressed immense gratitude to NAHCO Aviance.
She described the difficulties the school faced in coping without water and how all attempts to resolve the problem had been unsuccessful.
Emotional during the commissioning, Mrs. Victoria Adeyemi, the Headteacher of Ewu Primary School, repeatedly expressed her gratitude to NAHCO for their timely intervention. She danced with joy, stating, “All I can say is that God will bless NAHCO.”
The first project, located at State Primary School, 3 Bode Onifade Street, Ewutuntun, will serve the school, Community Primary School, Ewu, and Primary School, 1-7 Ogundele Street, Ewutuntun, serving both the named school and Methodist Primary School, Ewutuntun.
The statement also mentioned that the company provided power generating sets to ensure the boreholes have a reliable source of electricity.
Clean Water and Sanitation is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recognizing the importance of addressing this essential requirement in the community, NAHCO took the initiative to install borehole facilities in the schools.
These boreholes will provide clean and safe water, ensuring that the pupils and staff have access to potable water for drinking, sanitation, and other essential needs.
The CSR initiative is one of several ways in which NAHCO impacts the lives of the communities where it operates.
