NERC sets November 2024 deadline for prepaid meter updates

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has urged electricity consumers in Nigeria using prepaid meters to update their meters on or before November 2024.
This important announcement was shared on NERC’s official LinkedIn page on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.
The commission emphasized the significance of this deadline and encouraged all electricity consumers to take heed.
Importantly, NERC has assured consumers that this meter update is entirely free of charge. Furthermore, it clarified that the update process will not impact the meter readings negatively nor alter its operational pace.

In a statement, NERC stated, “If you currently use a prepaid meter, it’s time to consider an update. Starting in November 2024, recharging your meter may become impossible. However, the update process is hassle-free and comes at no cost. Distribution Companies (DisCos) will begin issuing two free Key Change Tokens (KCTs) for the meter update.”
NERC went on to advise consumers to get in touch with their respective Distribution Companies for more information on the update process.
It is essential to note that this update will have no effect on the units registered in your meter, nor will it accelerate its normal operational speed.
NERC reassured consumers, stating, “Your meter’s functionality and accuracy will remain intact.”
As outlined by NERC, recharging your meter will not be possible unless you complete the mandatory updating process.
