NEGF discusses plans for independent power generation, railway network

The North East Governors Forum (NEGF) is contemplating the establishment of independent companies for power generation and regional rail transportation to address the needs of the people in the region.

NEGF Chairman and Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, disclosed these plans during the opening session of the forum’s 8th meeting in Maiduguri, the state capital.

He emphasized the importance of these initiatives in light of recent constitutional amendments that moved power generation and railway transportation from the exclusive list to the concurrent list.

Governor Zulum stated, “Let me draw your attention to the recent amendment to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which, as amended, shifted power generation and railway transportation to the concurrent list. It is, therefore, essential for us in the North East to collaborate on establishing an independent power supply and a regional rail transportation system.”

The NEGF serves as a platform for discussing challenges affecting the region, and this 8th meeting has brought together governors from Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, and Yobe, with representatives from Taraba and Gombe attending on behalf of their respective governors.
