Police arrest cult members during initiation ceremony

Police authorities in Bauchi have successfully arrested four individuals suspected to be members of the notorious “Black Axe” cult group. The apprehension occurred during a cult initiation ceremony for new recruits.

The initiation event, held at midnight on September 2, 2023, took place on the outskirts of Bauchi, opposite the Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa University, Gubi Campus, along Kano-Bauchi Road.

The suspects have been identified as Eric Nuhu, 23, a 500-level student of ATBU; Zaharaddeen Hassan, 19, a National Diploma One student of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi; Felix John, 24, a Higher National Diploma One student of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi; and Daniel Masaka from Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

SP Ahmed Wakil, the Police Spokesman, released a statement confirming the arrests and detailing the investigation.

During interrogation, the first and second suspects confessed that they were invited by a fellow classmate named Abbas Apeh, a 500-level student at ATBU, and subsequently initiated into the cult group. The third and fourth suspects admitted to their longstanding membership in the cult and being invited to participate in the initiation ceremony for new members.

Authorities are currently intensifying efforts to apprehend any accomplices who may have fled the scene. After their capture, the suspects will face charges in court for the established offenses.
