Tinubu files emergency appeal to block release of academic records

President Bola Tinubu has filed an emergency application seeking a review of the judgment that ordered Chicago State University to release his academic records to Atiku Abubakar.

On September 19, Judge Jeffrey Gilbert of the United States District Court ordered the release of Mr. Tinubu’s records as part of an ongoing election challenge in Nigeria.

The judge mandated that the records be turned over to Mr. Abubakar by September 21 and required school administrators to certify the released records under oath.

As the school began preparing to release the files, Mr. Tinubu submitted an emergency application in the district, asking a senior judge to review Judge Gilbert’s September 19 order and delay execution until at least September 25.

Mr. Tinubu’s legal team, led by Christopher Carmichael, stated, “Due to the timing for compliance by Chicago State University – later today – Intervenor is filing this motion separately from its challenge to the Magistrate’s ruling on the application. Intervenor intends to file a substantive brief addressing the errors in the Magistrate’s decision by the end of the day.”

Judge Nancy Maldonado of the district has scheduled an urgent hearing on the matter for 3:00 p.m. local time.

Lawyers representing all parties, including CSU and Messrs, Tinubu and Atiku, are expected to participate in the virtual conference.
