Nigeria to integrate cervical cancer vaccine into immunisation routine

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has announced that, starting on October 24, 2023, the HPV vaccine will be included in Nigeria’s Routine Immunisation Schedule.

This significant step was shared by the NPHCDA via its official platform on Tuesday.

In the initial phase, “the introduction of the HPV vaccine will take place in sixteen states, namely Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Enugu, FCT, and Jigawa”.

The remaining states included in this phase are “Kano, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, and Taraba. This vaccination program specifically targets girls aged 9-14, and parents and caregivers are strongly urged to ensure that their children receive the HPV vaccine”.

The HPV vaccine provides protection against the Human Papillomavirus, a known cause of Cervical Cancer. “It is essential to note that these vaccines are both free and safe, with high levels of efficacy in preventing HPV-related diseases”.

The NPHCDA’s inclusion of the HPV vaccine in Nigeria’s Routine Immunization Schedule aims to safeguard the health and well-being of young girls across the country. By offering this protection at an early age, Nigeria takes a proactive approach in reducing the prevalence of Cervical Cancer and ensuring the future health of its citizens.

This significant milestone highlights Nigeria’s commitment to public health and underscores the importance of proactive measures in preventing life-threatening diseases. The integration of the HPV vaccine into routine immunisation represents a significant step in protecting the health of young girls and ultimately reducing the burden of Cervical Cancer in Nigeria.
