Falana recounts how Rivers govt thwarted $500k election arrest prosecution

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has alleged that during the last election in Rivers State, an individual was apprehended with around $500,000.

Charges were brought against the person; however, the state government intervened, requesting the discontinuation of the case.

Falana conveyed these assertions during an interview with Channels TV, where he advocated for the establishment of an independent commission free from political influence.

He emphasized the necessity of such a body to ensure the fair and impartial handling of electoral offenses.

In Falana’s words: “We must have in place an electoral offense commission to deal with those who violate the law, those who commit serious crimes before, during and after elections. Those who manipulate results and those who engage in thuggery and violence must be dealt with. If you allow the ruling parties either at the federal or state level, you won’t get anything because their Attorney-Generals usually are in the habit of filing nolle prosequi: we don’t want these thugs persecuted. Even in the last election, somebody was arrested in Rivers State with about five hundred thousand dollars, he was charged but the state government asked to discontinue the case”.
