Gunmen in Ogun attack government’s bullion van, kill accountant, steal millions
In a heartbreaking incident, armed robbers targeted the director finance and chief accountant of the Ogun State Government, Taiwo Oyekanmi, and made off with a significant sum of the government’s funds after opening fire and attacking him as he transported the money in a bullion van in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Reports indicate that Oyekanmi had withdrawn an undisclosed amount of money from a branch of Fidelity Bank in Abeokuta and was en route to the office when the armed assailants intercepted the homemade bullion van on the overhead bridge at Kuto, firing at the accountant and his aides. The criminals, reportedly wearing hoods, then used a sledgehammer to break into the bullion van and made off with the government’s funds.
Tragically, Oyekanmi and the other injured individuals were rushed to the State General Hospital, Ijaye, where the accountant succumbed to his wounds. It was also revealed that the police escort, who was not accompanying the team due to personal reasons, was not present at the time of the attack.
The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed the distressing episode and disclosed that efforts are underway to obtain CCTV footage from the bank to aid in the investigation. He also mentioned that measures are being taken to block possible exits from the state and apprehend the perpetrators.
The devastating loss of the esteemed accountant has left a palpable sense of sorrow, with the Secretary to the State Government Tokunbo Talabi already extending condolences to Oyekanmi’s family. The entire Ogun State community mourns the passing of a dedicated public servant and is united in seeking justice for this heinous crime.
