Disability-Friendly Buildings Mandatory By 2024: Heavy penalties for non-compliance
During a training session at Neptune Network Nigeria Limited’s head office in Abuja, Femi Alegbeleye, a representative from the Press & Public Relations unit of the National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD), made a significant announcement.
Starting from January 2024, all buildings will be required to be disability-friendly, and those that fail to meet this requirement will face severe consequences.
Femi explained that this new regulation will include the installation of railings and ramps for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
He emphasized that this measure is necessary to promote equality and ensure that PWDs can move around buildings safely and independently, without the need for assistance from others in public spaces.

Femi also mentioned that there would be a substantial fine imposed on buildings that do not adhere to these guidelines.
Furthermore, he revealed that the National Disability Commission has developed an app for red alert.
This app allows PWDs to report any instances of harassment or mistreatment they encounter. The Commission can then immediately locate the person and take necessary action.
According to him, the app is part of their efforts to ensure that PWDs feel safe and protected in public spaces.
This training session was an enlightening experience for Neptune Prime’s staff, who were eager to learn more about disability rights and how they can contribute to making their workplace more accessible.
The session provided valuable insights into the importance of promoting equality and creating a more inclusive society for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.
