NAWOJ advocates robust legal framework to address GBV
The National Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Aisha Ibrahim K. Bura, has advocated for a robust and enforceable legal framework to address perpetrators and improve rehabilitation for survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Nigeria.
Speaking at the United Nations (UN) Women Media Partners Conference 2023 in Abuja, Bura emphasized the need for collective action to prevent violence against women and girls.

During the conference themed “Unite! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls,” Bura commended UN Women for organising a dedicated event for media partners, highlighting the role of the Fourth Estate in raising awareness about the intricate nature of violence against women.
She stressed the importance of advocating for meaningful policy frameworks and societal value reorientation.
NAWOJ, actively participating in the 16 Days of Activism, conducted various activities across the 36 state chapters, including articles, talk shows, rallies, and engagements with authorities to demand clearer policy directions. Bura affirmed NAWOJ’s commitment to creating a safer society and declared, “We are united.”
UN Women Representative Beatrice Eyong underscored the economic impact of gender-based violence, stating that it has reduced the country’s gross domestic product by up to 2%.
HRH Igwe Amb. Dr. Lawrence Agubuzu Ogbunechendo of COTLA pledged support for efforts promoting gender equality and ending GBV in Nigeria.
The conference featured panel discussions on challenges and opportunities in advancing gender equality and ending violence, inter-generational discourse on the media’s role, and sharing global best practices for media intervention.
Over 60 media professionals from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones participated, focusing on enhancing gender-sensitive reporting, especially regarding violence against women and girls.
