A police officer in Nyogor-Lueku, Rivers State, Inspector Nelson Abuante, has committed suicide following the accidental shooting of his colleague, Inspector Monday Gbaramana.

A source disclosed that the unfortunate incident occurred during an attempt to apprehend a suspect who was resisting arrest, Mr Akere Akpobari, leading to a brawl between him and the officers.

The two officers from Taabaa Division had gone to Nyogor-Lueku based on allegations against Akere made by his mother.

In the course of the confrontation, Inspector Abuante mistakenly shot Inspector Gbaramana, resulting in serious injuries.

In an attempt to rush the injured officer to the hospital, the car ran out of fuel, and Inspector Monday Gbaramana tragically succumbed to his injuries during the journey.

Afterwards, the devastated officer killed himself. Bodies of both officers have been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway to unravel the details surrounding the tragic occurrence.

“Yes, the incident happened. We are investigating to unravel what happened,” she said in a message.
