Quranic teacher in police custody for brutally flogging 11-year-old pupil

In Suleja, Niger State, Malam Nura, a Quranic teacher is currently in police custody in Minna, the state capital, following an order from the Niger State Child’s Right Agency (NSCRA) over the brutal injuries he inflicted on his 11-year-old-pupil, Isah Mu’azu, using a whip.
Isah Mu’azu, who was brought to Suleja for Quranic education alongside his brother, was reportedly flogged by his teacher for failing to memorise a portion of the Qur’an assigned to him. The victim’s parents are said to reside in the Kawo Area of Kaduna State.

Acting Director of the NSCRA, Suleiman Shehu, told news men in Minna that Nura has been arrested and handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. While the victim’s father has also been invited for questioning.
The child, suffering from the injuries, has been taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Shehu added that the suspect will face prosecution once the investigation concludes. The agency has dealt with over ten similar cases recently, where children were subjected to harsh treatment, and successfully prosecuted five of them.
