Yobe gov’t shuts down unregistered private schools

In a move to enhance the quality and standards of education, the Yobe State Government has revoked the licenses of all private schools in the state.
The decision was announced by Dr Muhammad Sani Idriss, the Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, during a meeting with private school proprietors at Government Girls Unity College in Damaturu.
Dr. Idriss emphasised that private schools must adhere to established rules and regulations, aligning their activities with those of public schools in the state.
The Commissioner stated that private schools operating in violation of the norms and values of Yobe would no longer be permitted to set their own rules.

The Commissioner clarified that the revocation of licenses is part of a broader effort by the government to assert control over the education system.
He highlighted the need for private schools to meet specific standards, and those failing to do so would need to reapply for new licenses within a designated timeframe.
Dr. Idriss conveyed the urgency of the matter, stating, “If you must operate a private school in Yobe State, you must play the game by its rules.”
He further explained that the cancellation of licenses does not imply the closure of private schools but rather a reset, requiring operators to reapply and meet established standards within 30 days.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner announced the introduction of a dual curriculum in both public and private schools.
Students will have the option to either memorise the Qur’an and learn Arabic or opt for French language studies, ensuring a broader educational experience.
In response to the initiative, Alhaji Maina Digma Gana, Chairman of the House Committee on Education and representative of Damagum Constituency in the state House of Assembly, expressed support for any measure aimed at imparting standard knowledge to the younger generation.
Proprietors who spoke after the meeting acknowledged the timeliness of the government’s intervention.
While calling for a flexible and efficient licensing process, they urged the authorities to ensure a quick and straightforward procedure without unnecessary bureaucracy.
