Cross River issues warning over suspected Haemorrhagic fever outbreak
Cross River state raised alarm on Saturday regarding a potential outbreak of viral haemorrhagic fever in old Ndebeji, located in the Akamkpa Local Government Area.
Viral haemorrhagic fever encompasses a group of infectious diseases that disrupt the blood’s clotting ability, typically transmitted through contact with infected animals, individuals, or insects, including notable examples like Ebola and yellow fever.
Dr. Henry Ayuk, the Commissioner for Health, disclosed in Calabar that a suspected index case is under thorough investigation in complete isolation at the Ndebeji healthcare center. He emphasized directing the state’s epidemiologist and her team to collaborate with the local government unit, collecting samples from suspected cases for diagnosis.
The health officials aim to implement palliative case management, establish robust infection prevention and control measures in the facility, and collaborate with community leaders to identify and restrict the movement of known contacts until the suspected index case’s sample results are available. Dr. Ayuk highlighted that symptoms could manifest early with fever, rash, body weakness, bleeding, or even remain asymptomatic.

Appealing to residents, he urged caution against rodents and insect bites, advising the use of personal protective wear when in proximity to livestock, animals, or zoos.
The state is taking proactive measures to manage and contain the potential outbreak, emphasizing community engagement and risk communication.
