Adamawa gov’t confirms 1 positive, 4 negative lassa fever cases

The government of Adamawa has officially verified one positive case among the five suspected instances of Lassa fever reported in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Felix Tangwami, said this at a press briefing in Yola on Monday.

He disclosed that the initial cases were admitted to Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH) in Yola on February 22.

Dr. Tangwami explained that samples from individuals who had come into contact with the patients were collected on February 23 and dispatched for testing at the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Abuja on February 24.

Out of the results received, four cases turned out negative, with one testing positive. The commissioner reassured that the two patients from NYSC Camp Damare who are still under medical care at MAUTH, Yola, are showing promising signs of recovery.

In an effort for further verification, a request has been made for a retest of the sample from the index patient.

Dr. Tangwami appealed for the public to maintain composure and adhere to the guidance provided by health professionals during sensitization activities. He encouraged swift reporting of any symptoms resembling those of Lassa Fever to the nearest health facility.

He expressed gratitude to the contact individuals for their cooperation with health workers in providing samples and adhering to isolation protocols, emphasising the importance of such actions in safeguarding the wider community.

Furthermore, Dr. Tangwami emphasised the importance of avoiding close contact, crowded areas, and excessive sun exposure, while stressing the necessity of maintaining good personal hygiene at all times.
