Anambra State Gov’t to punish officials for brutalizing suspect
The Anambra State government has taken a stern stance against the Special Anambra Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) operatives involved in the brutalization of Wilfred Ezike, also known as Mgbilimgba, in Onitsha.
In a viral video, SASA members were seen mercilessly beating Ezike with a pestle, prompting widespread condemnation across the state. Commissioner for Homeland Affairs, Chikodi Anarah, affirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the law, stating, “We will punish erring SASA operatives.”
He emphasized that while tackling criminal activities is vital, it must be done within the bounds of the law, and brutality is unjustifiable.
The incident sparked outrage as the victim, Ezike, pleaded for mercy, citing his wife’s pregnancy and his desire to see his child. However, the operatives callously disregarded his pleas, indicating their intent to cause harm.
The government’s response underscores its dedication to justice and accountability. Despite allegations against Ezike’s involvement in criminal activities, the government maintains that no justification exists for such brutality.

Additionally, the formation of SASA under Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s administration in 2023 aimed to address the rampant issue of touting in the state.
While efforts to combat touting are commendable, they must adhere to legal protocols and respect human rights. The investigation into this incident remains ongoing, with assurances from the government to take appropriate action against the responsible SASA members.
