I inherited $587m debt, N85bn liabilities from El-Rufai’s administration – Gov Uba Sani
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State revealed at a town hall meeting that he inherited a staggering debt burden of $587 million and N85 billion, along with 115 contractual liabilities from the previous administration led by Nasir El-Rufai. Sani expressed concern over the detrimental impact of this substantial debt on the state’s federal allocation.
The town hall meeting, attended by various stakeholders including traditional rulers, religious leaders, politicians, members of organised labor, civil society organisations, youths, women groups, former Governor Ramalan Yero, and former Chief of Defence Staff General Martin-Luther Agwai, provided a platform for Governor Sani to account for his stewardship.
Governor Sani, accompanied by his deputy Hadiza Balarabe, outlined the state’s revenue profile and elaborated on the significant debt left by his predecessor.
Despite facing this formidable challenge, he affirmed his commitment to advancing Kaduna State’s development agenda using the available resources efficiently.

During the meeting, the Commissioner of Finance, Shizzer Bada, presented insights into the state’s federal allocation and the portion deducted to service the inherited debt. Muktar Ahmed, the Budget and Planning counterpart, shed light on the numerous contractual liabilities arising from projects abandoned by contractors who had received payments under the previous administration.
Governor Sani reassured the populace of his unwavering focus on driving the state towards progress and sustainable development, despite the daunting financial situation inherited from the past administration.
