CAN faults FIRS’ ‘offensive’ easter message, demands apology
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a demand for a public apology from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) following an Easter advertisement that it found offensive.
The FIRS had posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) with the hashtag #FIRSNigeria, featuring a picture of a Point of Sale machine accompanied by the caption, “Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes.”
The post sparked widespread condemnation from Nigerians, especially Christians, prompting CAN to take action.
Despite the FIRS removing the post, CAN’s National Director of National Issues and Social Welfare, Abimbola Ayuba, released a statement calling for accountability.
Ayuba urged President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Finance Wale Edun, and the Department of State Services to address the incident and ensure that FIRS adheres to communication strategies promoting respect, unity, and cohesion.

In the statement, CAN emphasized the importance of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
It expressed deep concern over the recurring dissemination of provocative messages around religious holidays, particularly by public institutions. CAN emphasized that such actions undermine the country’s values of tolerance and respect for diverse religious beliefs.
CAN called for the retraction of the message and a public apology from FIRS management for the distress caused by the offensive advertisement.
The association highlighted the need for public institutions to exercise caution and consideration for the religious sensitivities of the Nigerian populace in their communications.
Furthermore, CAN urged all public and private organisations to be mindful of the cultural and religious diversity that defines Nigeria. It emphasized the importance of crafting communications that are respectful and inclusive of all religious backgrounds, especially during sensitive periods like religious holidays.
The demand for an apology from FIRS reflects CAN’s commitment to upholding religious freedom and promoting mutual respect among different religious communities in Nigeria.
