Kano Govt denies stray bullet incident at Government House

Despite earlier reports suggesting a journalist was struck by a stray bullet at the Kano Government House, the state government has refuted these claims.

The initial report stated that Naziru Idris Ya’u, a reporter from Abubakar Rimi Television Station, was hit by a stray bullet while at the Government House. “However, the government’s statement, issued by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director-General of Media and Publicity, dismissed these claims as misinformation”.

According to the government’s statement, Ya’u did sustain injuries, but they were caused by metal debris from an ongoing construction project within the Government House premises, not a stray bullet. “The statement emphasized that the area where Ya’u was injured had been cordoned off due to the construction work”.

Contrary to the government’s assertion, further investigation by SolaceBase revealed that the incident indeed involved a stray bullet.

The journalist himself confirmed that the incident occurred near the entrance gate of the Government House, close to a designated area for ablution at a mosque.

While the government maintains its stance, discussions among the Government House press crew indicate that the incident has caused concern and raised questions about how the news was disseminated.

Ya’u was reportedly taken to the hospital for additional treatment, and investigations into the source of the bullet are ongoing.

Despite the conflicting accounts, the incident underscores the need for transparency and thorough investigation into matters concerning the safety of journalists covering events at the Government House.
