Muslim Lawyers condemn Women Affairs Minister’s interference in mass wedding, vow to challenge in Court
The Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN) has strongly condemned the intrusion of the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, into the planned mass wedding of 100 orphans in Niger State. The group has faulted the minister’s position, stating that she has overstepped her bounds by interfering in a matter that is beyond her jurisdiction.
In a statement issued by the National President of MULAN, Barrister Saeed Muhammad Tudun-Wada, the group expressed its support for the proposed mass wedding, which is scheduled for May 24, 2024. The statement noted that the minister’s actions are unconstitutional and aim to deprive the Niger girls of their fundamental right to marry.
MULAN has assembled a team of five Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) and 27 other members to challenge the minister in court.
The group has urged the Speaker of Niger State, Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, to proceed with the planned sponsorship of the mass wedding, stating that “it is in line with Islamic principles and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

“The statement emphasized that every Nigerian has the right to marry whoever they wish, as long as it does not violate any provision of the constitution”.
MULAN has vowed to remove any obstacles that may hinder the exercise of Muslim rights and has pledged its support for the noble cause of its brothers in Niger State.
