Palliatives distribution fails to tackle poverty – Ex- Adamawa SSG
A former Secretary to the Adamawa State Government, Umar Bindir, has stated that the distribution of palliatives has failed to alleviate poverty in Nigeria. Speaking on Channels Television’s “Inside Sources” with Laolu Akande, Bindir cited the National Bureau of Statistics, which reports that an average of 40% of the Nigerian population lacks basic essentials like shelter, food, and clothing.
Bindir emphasized that tackling poverty requires a technical and committed approach, rather than just distributing palliatives. He criticized previous poverty alleviation programs, including Napep, Sure P, YouWin, and the Social Investment program, saying they have not made a significant impact on poverty levels.

Instead, Bindir advocated for training the masses in technical vocations around the agriculture value chain to boost food production and alleviate poverty. He stressed the need for a clear and solid strategy from the federal government in partnership with states to address poverty effectively.
“The distribution of palliatives is an immediate step to address hardship, but how long can a bag of rice take a family?” Bindir asked, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions to poverty.
