MultiChoice to appeal tribunal’s ruling on subscription rate hike

MultiChoice Nigeria has announced its decision to appeal the ruling of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) regarding the tribunal’s jurisdiction over price regulation matters.

On Friday, the CCPT fined MultiChoice N150 million for violating its order to halt a subscription rate hike for DStv and GOtv packages.

The tribunal, based in Abuja and chaired by Thomas Okosun, also mandated a one-month free subscription for all Nigerian subscribers on these platforms.

The tribunal had previously issued an interim order on April 29, preventing MultiChoice from raising its tariffs starting May 1. This order followed an ex-parte motion from Festus Onifade’s counsel, Ejiro Awaritoma.

In response, MultiChoice issued a statement on Friday disagreeing with the ruling and confirming plans to file an appeal.

“We disagree with the ruling and will therefore file an appeal against said ruling. As the matter is currently sub judice, we are restrained from making further comments,” the company stated.
