President Bola Tinubu has ordered that civil servants who have relocated abroad but continue to receive salaries from the government must refund the funds. He also directed that supervisors and department heads who allowed this fraud to occur under their watch be punished.
The President gave the directive on Saturday at the award night organised by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF), to commemorate the 2024 Civil Service Week.
He expressed disappointment in the “ghost workers” and committed to addressing challenges in the civil service sector.
According to President Tinubu, the directive is part of his administration’s efforts to tackle corruption and ensure that only deserving civil servants receive their salaries.
He emphasized that his government will not tolerate any form of fraud or misconduct in the civil service.
The President’s directive has been welcomed by many Nigerians who see it as a step in the right direction towards tackling corruption in the country.

The move is also expected to save the government millions of naira in salaries paid to absent civil servants.
The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and other relevant agencies have been tasked with ensuring that the directive is implemented and that those responsible for the fraud are held accountable.
In his speech, President Tinubu also commended hardworking civil servants who have dedicated themselves to serving the country.

The 2024 Civil Service Week award night was attended by top government officials, including the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mamman Ahmadu, and other dignitaries.
