Police officer loses both hands while firing tear gas at protesters

A Kenyan Police Inspector, David Maina, has lost two of his hands while shooting tear gas canister at protesters in Nairobi last week.

The police officer, assigned to the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), was engaged in a confrontation with demonstrators in the city centre on Tuesday, June 18, when the incident occurred.

Reports indicate that the protest was in response to the finance bill. As tensions escalated, law enforcement resorted to the use of water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Tragically, Inspector Maina suffered the loss of both hands when a tear gas canister exploded in his grasp.

He is currently receiving medical care at Nairobi West Hospital for his injuries.
