Senate approves 300% salary increase for judges

In a move to enhance the remuneration of judicial officers, the Senate has passed a bill seeking a 300 per cent increase in salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits for the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, and other judicial office holders in Nigeria.

The bill sailed through its third reading on Wednesday, following the adoption of a report presented by Senator Mohammed Monguno, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters.

Monguno explained the importance of adequate remuneration for judicial officers, stating that it would enable them to focus on professional development without financial constraints.

He stressed that fair compensation is crucial for maintaining public trust in the judiciary’s impartiality and integrity.

Also, the approved increment is already captured in the 2024 Appropriation Act, ensuring its implementation in the upcoming fiscal year.
